A princess always needs a castle

The little girl I babysit turned 4 this month, and of course I needed to make a cake for her. I wasn't surprised to find out that she had requested a pink sparkly castle cake, which was just what I made for her. I made a two tiered chocolate cake, with tinted vanilla icing. I used toilet paper rolls covered in saran wrap and icing for the towers and waffle cones covered in icing and pink sugar for the turrets. I also used waffle cones for the doors and windows of the castle. For the finishing details, I piped ivy all over the cake to make it look more natural and more like a castle.
I was happy with how this cake turned out and so was everyone at the party.

Big Red Firetruck

My sister nannies two twin boys, who are of course in love with basically anything that moves. Cars, bikes, trucks and most of all, firetrucks!
So of course I just had to make a firetruck for their birthday party.

It was big, bright and heaaaavy. I made 3 9''x13'' chocolate cakes. I cut one cake in half, using the two pieces for the "cab" of the truck. I cut another one of the cakes with one part just over half so that I could have the piece in the middle (notice there's a gap between the two red pieces of cake).

I then took the last cake, cut it in half and stacked it onto the truck, and then iced the entire thing.

Finally to top it all of, I put some jolly rancher candies on the cab, front and back for lights, and oreo's for wheels!

I wasn't there to see if they liked it, but I was assured by others that everyone liked it.

Mothers Day & A Birthday

So it was my mom's birthday, which was closely followed by mother's day! I decided to make a cupcake bouquet rather than one large cake as my mom really likes flowers. I decorated the cupcakes like roses and I even made one small one-layer cake, which I decorated as one huge flower.
I'm really proud of myself as this is the first time making one of these!

March Madness

So I don't know if you're a basketball fan or not, but my dad is. That means that for 2 straight weeks in March, fortunately the two that I am off from school, NCAA basketball is playing on the TV nonstop. Now I like basketball, but I'm not the kind of person that likes to watch it. I can handle one, but when it comes to more than that in one day, that's too much for me. It's my dad's favorite time though so we all sit down and watch with him.

In the spirit of March Madness I made some vanilla cupcakes with vanilla icing, from the Magnolia Bakery cookbook that I got for Christmas. The recipe is also available here and the icing recipe is available here if you wanted to try them out.

Smile for the Camera

I made this cake for my sisters 20th birthday. As you can probably tell, she loves photography. I made a replica of the camera that she has, a Nikon D3000. I put as much detail as I could but some things were wayyyy too small to even be written. I made both the camera and the cake underneath of chocolate cake, and vanilla icing. My sister really wanted peppermint too so I crushed up peppermints and put them in the icing in the larger cake. I'm really happy with how this turned out since it was my first sculpted cake. I had no help and it took me awhile but I love how it turned out, and my sister was really surprised. :)
I used chocolate fondant on the camera because my sister isn't a huge fan of other fondant. When she cut into the camera she couldn't stop eating it because according to her, it tasted like JosLouis. If you don't know what a Jos Louis is, you probably should go find out because you've had a sad childhood.

Hope you like it!
